On second thought, don't take your kids to see this -- they might be tempted to start a few fires in hopes of a house call.
It’s a well-known fact that pretty much all children go through some sort of “firefighters are super cool!” phase. The Tokyo Fire Department’s (TFD) Dezome-shiki offers the best opportunity to treat your (inner) child to a spectacular display of bravado.
The event is held at New Year to promote fire safety and awareness, with demonstrations of firefighting and emergency rescue techniques.
The opening parade features enough fire engines and helicopters (more than 100) to delight any kid’s soul. Other highlights include performances by the TFD’s color guards, emergency drills and more.
But the undeniable highlight is the Edo Firemanship Preservation Association’s exhibition of gravity-defying stunts across wooden ladders. The display is designed to recreate traditional techniques used during the 17th century when the most effective way of dealing with fire was to tear down the building.
January 6, from 9:30 a.m. Tokyo Big Sight, Odaiba. More info online.
