Harajuku Super Yosakoi
One of Japan's "traditional" summer dances, in true Harajuku style.

Officially known as the Harajuku Omotesando Genki Matsuri Super Yosakoi, this annual event is one of Tokyo’s “big three” summer festivals -- which all happen to take place on the same weekend.

Sadly, this year’s Asakusa Samba Festival is cancelled; but you can still enjoy the other two parties in the grand triumvirate.

The 2011 matsuri features 91 teams performing on stages spread around the Harajuku area. Show up early to snag a good viewing spot for the main parade down Omotesando Dori from 12:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. on August 28.

If you find yourself in need of some refreshment, head over to Jiman-Ichi market located in the Yoyogi Park event plaza.

There you’ll find thirty-some booths selling everything from Yamagata ramen to wooden crafts from Kochi, to represent the various teams’ home towns.

August 27-28. Harajuku, Omotesando and Meiji Jingu areas. More info online.
