The tatami room, designed by Kaname Okajima, is bare-bones -- just beds and some floor pillows -- but the simplicity will feel refreshing. And you'll have cred for living according to Zen principles.

The boutique hotel phenomenon has yet to hit Tokyo in any significant way, making Claska still the city's pioneer -- five years after opening.

The less-than-convenient location remains the major drawback for the hotel, but the latest round of renovations has created more for you to do when you are stuck in Meguro. The new set of gallery spaces includes some room/gallery hybrids -- a collaboration project between the hotel and local creatives.

Regular rooms are a pleasant voyage into Japanese modernity, and the Torafu-designed carved-out walls of the "Weekly Residences" are a must-see.

The lobby's Kiokuh dining area makes for a pleasant daytime café stop and works even better in the evening for drinks. Check the schedule for the Claska's monthly party, usually held in conjunction with new shows. The atmosphere and crowd are always great, and the free drinks even better.
