Half of the fun of shopping in Tokyo is navigating the stores. There is more clothing available in the actual shop than shown in this pic, but not that much more.
The American-born, Vito Acconci, was known in the 70s for his risky performance art (we can't even talk about it), but today, Acconci has turned his unruly penchant for design into the New York-based United Bamboo, a clothing boutique in Daikanyama, Tokyo.
United Bamboo first opened its Japanese store -- a wildly fashionable concept shop -- in a two-story office building in 2003 in the back streets of Daikanyama. Acconci covered the entire exterior of the store with mesh, softening the concrete facade and making it more approachable.
The interior of the space is like walking into the belly of a jellyfish -- glowing walls with clothes hanging inside transparent alcoves -- but boasts a very small selection of clothing. So, for a wider selection of United Bamboo's men's line, hit the Omotesando store behind Omotesando Hills.
