Tokyo Girls Collection Spring 2010: Mega models and 25,500 fans
While high fashion and designer brands stumble in Japan, Tokyo Girls Collection's combination of 'real clothes' and popular models continues to appeal
By W. David Marx 8 March, 2010The Spring 2010 edition of Tokyo Girls Collection -- the semi-annual fashion show festival of casual Japanese brands -- was held at the Yokohama Arena on March 6. The tenth show since the event's start in 2005, this installment had the highest attendance ever of 25,500.
The scale may have been bigger, but the organizers did not mess with the usual formula of female mega-celebrities wearing popular gyaru brands like Cecil McBee and Liz Lisa.
Although the show is nominally about the latest collections for Japanese casual brands, the crowds seem most excited about the appearance of their favorite stars. Magazine superstars Yu Yamada, Lena Fujii and Nozomi Sasaki appeared multiple times, but the female-heavy audience seemed equally thrilled with guest appearances from TV stars such as Becky and gravure idol Aki Hoshino.
The next Tokyo Girls Collection will be held in Okinawa on April 24. Expect more models in bikinis.
