Interview: Christian Louboutin stops by Tokyo

... and professes: If Tokyo were a shoe, it would be a patent leather, shiny little bootie

God said "Let women have feet, and let them wear Christian Louboutin shoes." And so they did, and it was good.

Footwear designer Louboutin was in Tokyo recently to establish Christian Louboutin Japan in preparation for a future Ginza store. We talked with the eponymous footwear designer about his time in town.

CNNGo: When you come to Tokyo, where do you usually stay?

Christian Louboutin: I always stay at the Park Hyatt. It’s that one from Sofia [Coppola]’s movie, right? I would like to try a different place but there’s never any time. You know, you always think it’ll be OK to book without looking around, and then you get there and you’re like 'oh &$%#”…'

CNNGo: Try the Peninsula, maybe?

Louboutin: Yeah, I've heard it’s good. I'll try it next time.

CNNGo: What's your favorite thing to do in Tokyo?

Louboutin: I like to drive through the city in the middle of the night.

CNNGo: Does it give you that "Blade Runner" vibe that way?

Louboutin: No, when I think of that movie I think of chaos. I think chaotic Hong Kong is definitely more fit for a "Blade Runner" comparison. Tokyo is much more controlled and calm.

CNNGo: I'm sure the places you visit inspire your designs, but does Tokyo have a shoe?

Louboutin: Yes of course they inspire me but there's no shoe from Tokyo yet…

CNNGo: Then what would it look like if you were to make one?

Louboutin: It would be a boot. One of those little booties. And it wouldn't be suede, it would be something… patent leather and shiny. A spectator.

CNNGo: You just did a photographic collaboration with Barbie. Would you do something with the Japan-equivalent, Licca?

Louboutin: Well, I would have to meet the young lady first.

CNNGo: Have you experienced the dining landscape of Tokyo much?

Louboutin: Yes, it's fantastic. But I'm not too keen on ryokan. They're not for me… especially those boiling baths. I feel like a lobster in them.
