Let's be frank: Bowling is old-fashioned. Tokyo Bowling Center in Kichijoji is thankfully aware of this fact and has gone out of its way to emphasize this, through its perfectly retro habitat for this so-called sport.
The balls are all candy colored in neon fruit tones. The walls are covered with vaguely psychedelic fonts and design from the 1960s. The wacky TV animations for "Strike," Spare," and the unfortunately common "Gutter" appear to utilize early 1990s video graphic technology.
The overall effect is a cleaner version of the American bowling alley experience. There isn't a guy cooking up hamburgers and French fries in the back, but at least you won't smell like cigarettes and grease on exit.
Most importantly, Tokyo Bowling Center knows the most key ingredient for a good night of bowling: Beer. It's available in cans from a vending machine.
