Fireflies: the only kind of bug we'd actually want to be trapped in a cage with.
We all remember those dewy summer evenings spent peeking through bushes and running round the yard, chasing the “lightning bugs.” And it’s a hard-hearted adult indeed who doesn’t feel even the tiniest thrill at the sight of their glow.
Reclaim that magical feeling this weekend at the Amanokawa Hotaru Festival in Shirokane Plaza. From 7:30 to 10 p.m. July 1 - 2, visitors get the chance to enter an enormous mosquito-net-covered space filled with thousands of Yamagata’s famous “Genji-botaru” fireflies.
During the day there will be plenty of events for the kids, including musical performances and a 15-meter-long “river” where they can scoop out yoyos and other toys.
Meanwhile, the adults can relax over at the beer garden area, open from 4 to 8:30 p.m.
