Japanese fashion consultant Patrick Macias documents a makeshift shantytown of cardboard boxes that sprang up alongside youth-fashion mecca Shibuya 109 on New Year's Eve.

The occupants? Not homeless men, but teenage girls trying to get a jump on the first discount sales of the year. At first glance this would seem to show the incredible lengths Tokyo girls will go to in order to stay on the cutting edge of fashion. But in fact, it's just another reminder that the average 109 customer isn't a Tokyoite (who could easily take a train in the morning) but rather a girl from a far-flung suburb.
