Kim-Asada rivalry spurs global cyber-warfare

South Koreans band together to attack Japan's controversial 2ch BBS for comments suggesting an improper win for ice skating gold medalist Yu-Na Kim

Korean cyber attack Yu-Na Kim shows off her gold medal while Mao Asada looks on at the award ceremony for the Ladies Figure Skating event at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics

Korea and Japan have had tumultous relations throughout history, and this national rivalry was likely to be reheated during the recent figure skating competition between South Korean skater Yu-Na Kim and Japanese skater Mao Asada at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

And lo and behold, Japanese BBS 2ch suffered a massive cyber attack on March 1 from what was later identified as Korean web users. Timed to coincide with the March 1 national holiday celebrating Korea's 1919 rebellion against its colonial overlord Japan, Korean netizens banded together to silence 2ch after a thread on the site offered comments suggesting that Kim had bribed the judges. A clip from NTV claiming that Mao should have had a higher score also is believed to have fueled the Korean anger.

Most Japanese have generally accepted Asada's defeat with resignation rather than indignation, but 2ch, famous as a hotbed of nationalistic opinion, was a likely source of anti-Kim sentiment. When paired with the South Korean zeal for its own Olympic victories and defeats, these two parties were due for an online clash.

While 2ch may seem like a victim in this case, we should remind you that Japanese netizens back in 2008 crashed the Korean VANK server when Asada defeated Kim at the Grand Prix final in Goyang, Korea. For East Asians, attacking a website in your rival's country is just the way to celebrate figure skating victory -- like tearing down the goalpost for Americans.

This current episode will not likely be the final skirmish in what may be a longer war. Kyodo News claims that 77,000 Korean net users have joined a community pledging to continue cyber attacks against Japanese websites. Perhaps a peace conference can be held at the convenient Tsushima Island -- with special appearances from Mao Asada and Yu-Na Kim. They don't have to skate or anything. They just have to tell everyone to knock it off and move on with their lives.

That Olympic moment was a combination of graces, through Ms Kims fortitude, Ms Rochettes determination and Ms Asadas resiliance we were brought a moment of understanding. Thanks to all involved.
Organized mass cyber attacks? Such modern geek warfare. As for the skating, people really need to calm down. If anyone watched the two skaters' performances, it's clear that Kim Yu-Na rightfully deserved the gold medal. Her performance was flawless and artistically beautiful. I mean, it's the Olympics, as in any competition someone wins and someone unfortunately doesn't. Athletes don't need to cheat, they are brilliantly talented and have trained hard their whole careers. Hopefully these cyber-gang bangers don't bring either of them down.
It is rather a technical issue I think. On 2ch forums there have been posts listing many modifications made on judging system in these 4 years, most of which seemed favorable to Kim. Some people find politics there and, at least, it is natural to believe the situation gave Asada much pressure and stress. No one claims Asada was better in Vancouver. Maybe there's no such conspiracy, but we Japanese know that we are too poor at politics.
Kim's overall performance was better than Mao's. Kim incorpolated valet type of move that appealed her femininity. And her facial expresions were so attractive. On the other hand, Mao's jumps were excellent but she was a little bit stiff and her facial expresions were not as friendly.
VANK is known as a cyber terrorism group that attacked numerous Japanese websites. Stating that the Japanese are the ones to blame for attacking VANK is just like blaming the police for shooting criminals.
that really is not the issue. south koreans were outrageous about 2ch users' hatred towards Korean. the leader of this attack planned this for a more than a month from my knowledge. I repeat. this cyber-attack is irrevant to this figure skating nonsense. stop with this guess-writing of articles. I just have a hard time believing this article is from CNN web. before I start how this all started from, let me just notify you that 2ch(www.2ch.net) is one of the largest japanese web-community site. the leader, also the recruiter, used 2ch users' anti-Korean comment on a murder of a Korean international student in Russia happened back in Feburary 19th, 2010 to gather participation. the overall attitude that could be observed from the 2ch users' comments are that "he was Korean, and therefore he was deserved to die. we should learn from the Russians' doing of mercilessly killing Korean" this unrealistically, yet true, anti-racial comment, combined with a background hatred of Korean towards Japanese outraged many Koreans, and the participant reached 85,000 by the March 1st, the day of the attack, which is the national holiday for commemorating the March 1st movement.' the struggle is still an on-going conflict. and we will have some more time to observe the incident. but just do not be mistaken. the dispute about this figure skating is none the cause.
Japanese typically in daily bases enjoy bashing Koreans. In many platform they have dedicated many sites to bash Koreans from start of the internet. They have a very vile and vicious attitude toward other Asians stemming from old emperial days when they intentionally demoralized all Asians to make it easy for them to conquer Asia. Just as an example of how low and vile they are - Koreans are still finding humungous nails that was nailed down to Korean earth back in colonial days where Japan believed the nations (Korea) energy streams flow, so they could stop the earth energy from flowing and prevent Korea from ever prospering. It is just one example of how stupidly low and vile these Japanese are. Korean bashing continues till this day and Koreans are sick and tried of their vile ways. They bash Koreans with unfounded lies and fabricate them as truth and are very cruel in their ways. One day justice will be done and it is writen in the stars. And it will be of Japan's own doing. It's hard to go the high road when a nation viciously lie and make up demeanoring things about another nation just to slander you - which is Japan's nature. So Koreans fight back but there really is no need. Japan will go down on it's own - It's called Karma. They are ugly inside and out and will dissipate and go down in history as such.
@truthtellerx You are telling a complete bullshit. VANK is a website that corrects false information about Korea on global websites. It has nothing to do with cyber attacks. However, it was a japanese website 2ch who actively attacked many Korean websites. VANK was one of the victims. Stating that the Japanese are the ones to blame for attacking VANK is therefore valid. Shame on you.. tsk tsk
While the rest of the world is praising on Yuna's performance in vancouver, many Japanese are posting hate comments/videos online with untruthful facts? This may explain the crazy Japanese mentality of attaching pearl harbor and dreaming of invading US afterwards. Russian male figure skater Pluschenko complained about his lost/score against american skater Evan Lysacek but his russian fans didn't go crazy online posting hate comments/videos about Evan, his opponent and the winner!
Plus, let's get this straight, please. As someone mentioned above, it's not just about Yuna Kim and Mao Asada. Well I'd say its NOT about Yuna Kim and all the bad comments about her made by 'some' rude Japanese netizens (the reason why I use 'some' here is becuase obviously not all of them are that rude and so are not all the Koreans either!), because Yuna's performance was just outstanding and let's admit this, nobody can catch her. At least not for now. Anyway, the point is, again as someone said, this cyber attack was more about the Russian Incident, we call. There was an article about a group of Russisan people beating up a Korean student to death and the Japnaese in commented: "Go Russians!" "Good job!" "We should give them medals!" "Yay Japan, and f*** Korea!" Yes, yes, as the majority of people comment about this incident elsewhere, such provocation of a certain group of Japanese people doesn't give the Koreans right to do such a thing, it was immature and irrational and everything, but seriously, a PERSON DIED. Any kind of similar comments about a death of a poor student would have disturbed people.
