Seven layers of vanity: Japanese men need better skin care

A recent study discovers that Japanese men don't use as many skin care products as their women want them to. And this from the land of 'herbivore men'?
male skin careTemple to the god of nice skin.

This April, online marketing consultants Spire and C.A. Mobile conducted a survey of close to 2,000 Japanese men and women to determine their attitudes towards skin care. Eighty percent admitted paying a "high degree" of attention to their skin condition, with women citing "blemishes and wrinkles" and men claiming "dryness" as their major concerns.

Nothing particularly shocking about that. Especially considering the way some guys are only too happy to abandon masculinity in favor of a bit of shameless pampering. But a follow-up question about whether men should use basic skin care products garnered more than 70 percent "yes" responses among women (only 36 percent of men claimed the same.) Intriguingly, the reverse question -- "should women use basic skin care products and makeup?" received only a 44.9 percent affirmative response from men, with a 66.4 percent 'yes' response from women.

Reaction to the report on Japanese blogs varied wildly, from the expected "I never use basic skin care products, and I'm fine!" (sure, pal) all the way down to "what's a facial wash? Is that like soap, for your face?"
