A collection of Japanese talking cats

These cats are either very skilled at speaking or very skilled at convincing their owners their meows sound like the Japanese language

Inspired by the BuzzFeed post about a Japanese sleepy and chatty cat, we wanted to audit a wider range of talking Japanese cats on YouTube. So for your viewing pleasure, here are four Japanese cats whose meows sound vaguely like the Japanese language. In order to engage in some manner of scientific, objective analysis, we have added a number to rank the cat's speech from 1 (we are all collectively hallucinating) to 5 (oh, the wonders of feline discourse!) for each video.

1. Matchan: Conversing cat

The original talking cat on BuzzFeed. With closed eyes, Matchan barks responses to her owner's questions. There seems to be some heavy purring underneath the carping so we have to think that Matchan enjoys this kind of human interaction. Or the cat is so old she is malfunctioning.

Rating: 3 of 5 (Sounds are not very human, but timing is good.)

2. Chacha: This cat loves tuna

Featured on Japanese variety television, that bastion of impeccable journalistic integrity, 10 year-old Chacha from Kobe "talks like a human." When bluefin tuna is placed in front of Chacha, the cat starts making a strange "mam-mam-mam" sound that its owners somehow interpret as "maguro umai na": "This red tuna is delicious!" We are pretty sure the subtitles are doing most of the talking.

Rating: 1 of 5 (Sorry, we are just not buying it.)

3. Theo: Welcome home, owner

Theo -- pronounced "shio" in Japanese -- says many things that sound like Japanese, making him a bona fide star of YouTube. At the head of this clip, he very clearly greets his owner with "Okaeri" ("Welcome home.") This sounds pretty much like "okaeri" without even having to feed us the normal brain-manipulating subtitles. The only doubt we have is that this was possibly faked using sped-up human voices. No offense to the "Papa" who made the video but you can't always believe what you see on YouTube.

Rating: 4 of 5 (Very impressive "Okaeri" if not a massive hoax)

4. Yukke: Danger and misanthropy

Yukke is another YouTube star feline who apparently utters many words. Towards the end of this highly-viewed video, Yukke is purported to say "Abunai!" ("That's dangerous!") and "Hito mou yada yo" ("I am sick of humans.") The latter one is complete fiction, but we can see where they got "abunai." Even if the cat isn't saying "abunai," that's a pretty weird sound for a cat to make. But what exactly was so "dangerous" outside, Yukke, that makes you hate humans so much?

Rating: 2 of 5 (The "abunai" is semi-plausible)
