'New York Times' slurps some Tokyo noodles

Writer Matt Gross recently took a tour of Tokyo ramen shops for the "New York Times." The article acts as a great primer on the basics of ramen culture, some of the city's most famous spots and a few of the best blogs for ramen shop reviews.

The article gives a shout-out to Mutekiya (1-17-1 Minami-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, 03 3982 7656, 10:30am-4am) in Ikebukuro -- one of the most famed noodle shops in the city. Although Mutekiya is surely a must-eat, in CNNGo's roundup of Ikebukuro ramen 'gekisenku,' writer Andrew Szymanski encourages ramen fans to also hit Menya Goto and Tori no Ana on any noodle trip to Ikebukuro.

And what would any article about ramen be without mentioning Ramen Jiro? CNNGo had looked closely at this highly controversial noodle chain in the past, and Gross' reaction echoes the ambiguity of many Tokyoites.
