Miss Mister Donut: So many contradictions

Miss Mister Donut: So many contradictions

Model Saki Aibu, Miss Mister Donut for 2010, leads a press conference to endorse the donut chain's... new pretzel? What is going on?

On March 1, formidable Japanese donut chain Mister Donut brought together 40 "Miss" pageant winners from all over Japan to announce the company's new line-up of Spring doughnuts. Regular Mister Donuts spokes-model Saki Aibu took on the "Miss Mister Donut" title for the day and led the festivities.

After viewing the YouTube clip of the launch ceremony, we understand that there are many new products using special ingredients collected from all across Japan, but let's take a step back and look at the deep contradictions inherent in this entire Miss Mister Donut concept.

First of all, Miss Mister? Why not "Miss Donut"? And since the chain attracts a clientele of about 80% females, we are not sure why it's not Miss Donuts to start with.

Also, do beauty pageant winners normally include doughnuts in their diet? Admittedly, they may be like a surprising number of Tokyo women, who appear to eat a single donut for the day's total nutrition.

Then there's the fact that Aibu's main responsibility as Miss Mister Donut was not to promote a doughnut at all. Her job was to hold and pretend to eat a new Maple & Almond Pretzel -- something that looks like it was airlifted into Japan out of an Auntie Anne's Pretzels.

We should remember, however, that Aibu is not Miss Donut but Miss Mister Donut, so her loyalty is not with the pastry as much as with the corporation.

With still a year away, we can only speculate but who will win Miss Mister Donut 2011. But honestly speaking, our money is on Aibu for a repeat win. Next year she will no doubt endorse some kind of nikuman.
