At Maison Kayser, giant size means giant flavor.
When it came to bread, our Best Eats panel was happy to defer to the expertise of Tokyo hotel chef Patrice Martineau.
"The giant brioche -- melon-sized globes of airy, eggy brilliance -- yearn to be sliced and eaten with foie gras, or a dollop of good lobster salad,” Martineau says in a dreamy chef-like way that makes us want to jump in a cab right now and head over for some warm rolls.
The specialty breads at Maison Kayser -- particularly the rye and buckwheat loaves -- are also top-rate, moist and hearty, surrounded by a firm and glossy crust.
The croissants at Maison Kayser are the real deal as well -- flaky, buttery, light yet rich.
If you don’t believe us, ask the French: Maison Kayser’s croissants were recommmended by French newspaper Le Figaro.
Maison Kayser branches are located around Tokyo, but the shop in the Nihonbashi Coredo is our favorite. It has a pleasant café area where you can enjoy the brioche with a cup of coffee or tea.
