Tokyo's best bakery item

Rice may still be king in Japan, but these Tokyo bakery products are no jokers

Recommended: Boutique Troisgros' passion fruit custard tarts

Boutique Troisgros, Tokyo
A fruit cocktail in a cake at Troisgros.

Boutique Troisgros is solid across the board, but it's the uncommonly fresh custard tarts that will keep you coming back.

“You’ll find a colorful array of sweet treats such as passion fruit custard tarts topped with sliced kiwi and strawberry, and Danishes dusted with pistachio nuts,” says food expert Melinda Joe in nominating this tiny bakery to our Best Eats list.

It's also a good place to pick up a loaf of bread -- the shelves are stacked with golden loaves and baskets of near-perfect baguettes.

Joe recommends the gougeres -- what she calls "those addictive little balls of dough filled with cheese."

Arrive before 5 p.m. for the best items, including buttery croissants. They sell out quickly.

Open daily, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Boutique Troisgros, B2, Odakyu Main Bldg, 1-1-3 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, tel. +81 (0) 3 3342 1111, www.troisgros.jp
