Coca-Cola Japan vending machines get new option to send aid to Tohoku

Coca Cola Japan
Red, white and you: Coca-Cola Japan would like to teach the world to ... donate.

Next time you reach for a couple of coins to drop into one of Japan’s ever-hungry roadside vending machines, you might be able to do more than just slake your thirst or grab some gum.

That’s because Coca-Cola has added an unusual new product to its big, red jidouhanbaiki in the form of an option to donate money to areas hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Coke is it

Alongside cans of the Real Thing, Coke customers will be able to add either ¥10 or ¥100 for the benefit of the Japanese Red Cross and reconstruction efforts.

You don't even need to be thirsty, as standalone donations without a drink are welcome too.

Things go better

The initial rollout will see about 100 of the new vending machines installed in Chiba, Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures, with the possibility of more for the rest of Japan later in the year.

And, even if you prioritize carbonated sugar water over disaster relief and don't hit the shiny Donate Now buttons, Coke will still hand over a portion of its sales to the Tohoku effort. Can’t beat the feeling.
