4 best Tokyo nightclubs for celebrity spotting

Stars are notorious for their privacy, but you may catch them at these glamorous spots during the wee hours
Tokyo nightclubsSamantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan arrive at Le Baron de Paris for Charlotte Ronson's fashion show after party.

Celebrity-spotting is tres gauche, and we're personally not into it or anything. But for research purposes -- yes, yes, research purposes -- here are the four Tokyo nightclubs where you’re most likely to find yourself rubbing shoulders and bumpin’ booties with high-caliber scenesters. After 1am, of course.

Le Baron de Paris

I.D.: This Marc Newson co-owned club is the de-facto star-power divining rod any given night of the week.

Atmosphere: Dark, red-lit underground S&M boudoir from the early 20th century.

Most likely to bump into: Both local and Hollywood glitterati. John Mayer comes here when on vacation, Beyonce was spotted after Summersonic recently, and local favorites You, Marie and Ai Kago are mainstays. And did I mention, one David Hasselhoff?

Tip: Take out a 30-year loan and also try Amour next door, housing all private VIP karaoke rooms dripping in over-the-top glamour.

Le Baron de Paris: B1 3-8-40 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, tel. 03 3408 3665, www.lebaron.jp

New Lex Edo

I.D.: The box formerly known as legendary foreign celeb-friendly club Lexington Queen.

Atmosphere: Dingy, cramped and, despite the new name, still hopelessly old-school. But always full of beautiful people getting ugly together.

Most likely to bump into: Paris and Nikki Hilton, and lots and lots of models who drink free. Expect fresh Eastern European faces every three months.

Tip: Be a gentleman, and you might catch the eye of Bill, Guardian of the Door (who might call you up to escort celebs when they pop in).

New Lex Edo: B1 3-13-14 Roppongi, Minato-ku, tel. 03-3479-7477, www.newlex-edo.com

Trump House

I.D.: The Trump Room's fairly newborn sister, still an underground hangout in Shibuya.

Atmosphere: The gilded ego. Mirror-plated walls, gold seats, and a gajillion chandeliers are likely to go to your head. Try not to be mesmerized by your own dashing reflection.

Most likely to bump into: Popular magazine models like Yu Yamada and Elli Rose, as well as 'adult video' actress Maria Ozawa. Acclaimed actor Tadanobu Asano also comes in to do some intimate DJ sets.

Tip: The best night to hit Trump House is its Tokyo Dandy party. Dress up for the theme and roll with the loonies that come out of the woodwork; you never know who might be behind that mask.

Trump House: B1 1-6-5 Dougenzaka, Shibuya-ku, tel. 03 3770 2325

Casba

I.D.: A raw, members-only club for the deep night set.

Atmosphere: Retro, kitschy 'snack'-type bar, described by one guest as 'scary.'

Most likely to bump into: The global elite of celebrities, designers, photographers, musicians and artists: Marc Jacobs, Rei Kawakubo, Sophia Coppola, Hedi Slimane. More common sightings: actress Kyoko Koizumi.

Tip: You can`t just walk into Casba, so don't try knocking -- if you manage to even find it. But Reiko hosts a regular party at Le Baron, so try cozying up to her there to get a special pass.

Casbah: B1 2-14-15 Shibuya-Higashi, Shibuya-ku, 03 5467 5402
