VisitBritain's 3D pavement art tours the world
The United Kingdom is promoting royalty, not riots, in a surreal street art tour
8 September, 2011If you thought Aussie tourism was having a tough time, imagine what’s going on in Britain. Recently, they’ve had some real bad press.
VisitBritain’s campaign video featuring celebrities Jamie Oliver and Judi Dench was pulled from prime time slots last month, after the phrase, “You’re invited” was deemed inappropriate.
But not before pranksters hijacked the film and created their own version, inviting the world to their riots.
The “You’re Invited” campaign hasn’t given up there, though.
A $153 million global marketing campaign is featuring 3D pavement art of famous, less controversial, iconic British landmarks.
And, according to the campaign managers, the world doesn’t roll into London to hang out in clubs and sleep on living room floors, but in search of a little bit of high culture.
Pedestrians on Circular Quay can now witness surreal scenes of the royal wedding and Wimbledon.
The works have already toured Singapore and over the next month will travel to Shanghai, Delhi, Utrecht, Stockholm, Milan, Los Angeles and São Paulo.
Street artist Joe Hill has created much of the work, together with business partner Max Lowry, who died late last year before the project was completed.
