'Oi You!' Banksy's street art on Sydney Harbour's Cockatoo Island
The exhibition, billed as the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, features 23 works by graffiti artist Banksy
2 November, 2011He’s perhaps the world’s most famous anonymous person.
Banksy’s fame comes with a street-art oath that his true identity won’t be revealed. His works, though, are collected by some of the world’s most famous faces, including Brad Pitt and David Beckham. His work “Keeping it Spotless” sold for nearly $2 million in 2008.
But Banksy remains a faceless activist and subversive born from the Bristol underground, pulling off such bold stunts as lining Israel’s West bank wall with nine of his works in 2005.
For the next five weeks, 23 works from the mysterious artist are headlining an exhibition on Sydney Harbour’s Cockatoo Island.
The “Oi You!" collection will turn the old naval quarry into a mishmash of artistic rebellion and expression.
It's part of “Outpost Project, Art from the Streets,” which is billed as the biggest street-art exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere, features around 150 international artists and collectives.
Wonderlust, Zap, Ha Ha, Ethos and Ghost Patrol are among those involved.
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is putting on the show. The trust’s executive director, Geoff Bailey, said, “This will be the first time so many works by Banksy have ever been seen in Australia.”
“This is a private collection, showcasing an art movement that has become a global phenomenon.”
It’s another example of street art gaining respect in art galleries and this persecuted underground movement rising to mainstream appreciation.
