South Australian politician wants law to allow parents to censor their kids' Facebook profile
The Facebook revolution is giving birth to tech-reactionaries.Should parents be allowed to censor what media their children post on their Facebook profile? A conservative South Australian politician is drafting legislation so parents can do just that: monitor their children’s Facebook posts.
AAP reports that Dennis Hood, of the far-right Family First Party Party, was inspired by a mother’s complaint that Facebook wouldn’t communicate with her regarding what her 13-year-old child posted on the social networking website.
Facebook said it only communicate with the holder of the account -- the child.
"I believe that Facebook needs to amend its policy regarding parental controls and legislation needs to be amended to allow parents to properly monitor their children's online activities," Hood told AAP today.
He believes Facebook policy, coupled with privacy laws, are “interfering with parents' ability to properly protect their children from inappropriate online exposure."
"I have raised this issue in parliament and with the media because I believe it is important that parents have all the necessary tools to protect their kids online," the conservative politician said. "And this policy doesn't help."
