Newsflash! The Merlion goes on holiday

Don't look now but the beloved symbol of Singapore is taking a vacation

The Merlion
National icons need a break too.
2010 was a busy year for The Merlion.

Its form was immortalized by Salvatore Ferragamo, it stopped spouting for a spell and it's had some new neighbors to look at, or be looked at by, depending on your point of view.

No wonder it's off on a well-deserved vacation.

The half-lion, half-fish of a national icon will be closed for its routine spruce up from January 11 to 18, during which time its cement fondue, porcelain plates and eyes made from small red teacups will be given a sparkling polish over.

Tourists and avid shutterbugs keen to catch/snap a glimpse of the 8.6-meter-tall statue will have to make do with its 37-meter-tall doppelganger at Mount Imbiah, Sentosa (30 Imbiah Rd) or the three-meter-tall polymarble version at Mount Faber (Faber Point)

When not on the search for the perfect beach, Singapore native Charlene Fang has spent her days working as the editor for CNNGo Singapore and Time Out Singapore, and written for the likes of ELLE, Wallpaper*, Travel + Leisure and The Australian.
