Watching football on TV matches just isn’t enough for us. We are so inspired by how Lionel Messi takes apart defenses with just one well-placed pass, or how Kaka’s vision leads to a beautiful goal, that we want to take to the pitch, not the pub. While it’s one thing to get a pick-up game for leisure or fun, it’s another to play organized football where honor (and sometimes money) is at stake.

But where can football fans-turned-warriors go to play organized football? You’re in luck because we’ve ferreted out the best amateur football leagues to play in Singapore, whether they're full-fledged 11-a-sides or just a game of indoor soccer.

ESPZen

This league, started by a group of disgruntled bankers, consists of teams that play 11-a-side field football that compete in mid-week, Saturday or Sunday Leagues (read CNNGo’s review). It’s open to all, and if you’re looking for a team to play with check out their scouting board.

FootBallopod.com

It’s more a service as FootBallopod.com lists available amateur leagues and teams in Singapore. However, it does make searching easier and the articles do throw a spotlight on the local football scene (and we’re not talking about S-league here).

National Street Soccer League

If you can’t rustle up enough friends to play 11-a-side football, then this might be your best bet. National Street Soccer League is more a cup game than league, where the ultimate goal is to bring home the Lee Hsien Loong Challenge Trophy, and the S$2,500 cash prize.

The Cage

Let’s take this indoors at The Cage. This popular indoor pitch for street soccer folk often holds tournaments that only require a bare minimum of players. For example, they’re running the Amup Tribe tournament which is a three-a-side competition. So you’ll get fast-paced action and goals galore (read CNNGo’s article on Indoor Soccer).

I am a computer dude and ex-academic (although I won’t say it too loudly) who took time off to tour Asia and write about it. And I’ve not stopped writing since.
