A new flagship and Singapore's Park hotels will be three

Two Park hotels have already hit town -- and a bigger, grander project is on the way
Grand Park OrchardTo be opened in May 2010, the Grand Park Orchard will have an attached luxury retail atrium.

The Park Hotel Group has been busy in Singapore. They opened a new hotel in 2009, and there's another large project to be completed in 2010 -- the group's flagship hotel. That will make three Park hotels in the city-state. Combine that with several name changes, and it's easy to get confused. We sure did. So, here's a look at what's on offer for visitors to Singapore:

Grand Park Orchard

The former Park Hotel Orchard hotel closed in April this year for a S$80 million facelift. When it re-opens in the second quarter of 2010, the property will take on the name Grand Park Orchard and become the flagship hotel of the Park Hotel Group. The re-branded hotel will have 309 rooms and suites, including what the hotel dubs its Designer Suite series. Smack in the middle of Orchard Road, the location is still one of the best in town for shopping convenience.

But what got our attention was the addition of a new four-story, 83,000-square-foot retail atrium named after the famed London fashion district of Knightsbridge. It will house luxury-brand flagship stores, a herringbone-style exterior glass façade and an eight-story media wall.

Park Hotel Clarke Quay

The Park Hotel Clarke Quay is located along the Singapore River, at the entertainment and nightlife hub of Clarke Quay. The 336-room hotel held a soft launch in May. DP Architects, the group behind the hotel's design, was inspired by Singapore’s Victorian-style architecture of the early 1800s. The Park Hotel Clarke Quay has a distinctive red-tiled roof and towers with spires. The hotel features intelligent lighting and a glass façade that offers great views of the riverfront area.

Grand Park City Hall

The Grand Park City Hall hotel, formerly known as Grand Plaza Parkroyal, is an interesting ten-story atrium hotel that manages to retain the charm of restored, century-old shophouses and modern architecture, earning it an Architectural Heritage Award. Its location is central is convenient to both the civic and business districts, and within walking distance of some of Singapore’s oldest landmarks, such as Fort Canning, the National Museum and City Hall. For business travellers, it's next to Raffles City, Suntec City convention center and a skip away from the financial district.
