A cashless future may be closer than you think. Local electronic payment services provider NETS is looking to make cashless payments more accessible with the launch of a new service called iNets, which allows people to pay for things through iNets kiosks at MRT stations or their mobile phones with a downloaded application.
Through iNets, you can pay your utilities, credit card or telco bills, buy movie tickets, or pay for season parking, all on your mobile phone. The service could even be extended to ATM machines and cable television set-top boxes in the future. NETS assistant chief executive Suman Balani spoke to Today Online about the convenience of the system, saying, "I might be overseas in China and realize oh gosh, payment is due... I can just pick up my mobile, pay the bills."
For now, 15 service providers including SingTel, StarHub, UOB, OCBC, Cathay Cineplexes and SP Services are tapping the system, and Nets is looking to get more merchants on board. Things that users could soon pay for via iNets include airline tickets and tours, food and beverage, motoring services, prepaid top-ups, and e-books.
