Rayson Tan: The male order designer
Bold and striking, Rayson Tan's accessories are highly graphical in nature and design. He's the visionary behind home grown accessory brand L'ile aux Ashby. But Rayson Tan prefers to let his striking creations speak volumes as we round off our series on young designers at Parco@Millenia.
Some accessories are understated, others make a statement. The graphical nature of Rayson Tan’s accessory line isn't surprising. The 25-year-old is also a designer with The Arts House with a background in visual communications. Already a hit with fashion insiders, L'ile aux Asbhy will be broadening its appeal when it gets a home at Paco@Millenia.
CNNGo talks to the young designer-entrepreneur on his vision and style.
CNNGo: Exactly how do we pronounce "L'ile aux Ashby" and what does it mean?
Rayson Tan: It's pronounced "L-or-ash-bee" and it means 'the art of accessories.'
CNNGo: There are people who dismiss the importance of accessories or just don't see the point of them.
Tan: What they don't realise is accessories can add to your personality. Everyone wants to stand out. With stylish accessories, you can create a unique look for yourself even if your outfit isn’t a designer label; not everyone can afford designer frocks or to keep up with the latest trends. If you're on a limited budget, you can simply update your wardrobe with a few choice pieces of fashion accessories. All you need to do is carefully select one that's artistic, contemporary and stands on its own. Think of accessories as garnishes on a dish. It adds more appeal to whatever you're wearing. Great fashion accessories can make you a trendsetter.
CNNGo: How has being a graphic designer influenced your work as an accessory designer?
Tan: With my visual communications background and work experience, I believe I've created a niche label that draws inspiration from visual aesthetics and fused it with fashion trends.

CNNGo: L'ile aux Ashby has been around for four years and it's been recognized by indie and mainstream media alike. Are you planning to expand by joining the Parco@Millenia Incubator Program?
Tan: Definitely. I started L'ile aux Ashby when I was still serving my National Service. Although it has gained some recognition, I've never had my own fashion show until the Parco next NEXT fashion show. In some way, I wanted to gain affirmation for my label. I'm also intending to grow the brand so I need to learn the ropes of the business and get more professional advice. Joining Parco@Millenia had been a creatively enriching experience as well.
CNNGo: Who are you designing your accessories for?
Tan: Young, modern professional executives who are trendy and creative. They're at the stage of self-realization, and have a taste for luxury. All my pieces are handmade, with an attention to elaborate details and are limited in pieces. I have three or less pieces per design, and some designs are completely one-off. They're meant for those who love exclusive products and like feeling among the privileged minority.
CNNGo: What problems do you face as an accessory designer?
Tan: I use mixed mediums and materials for my creations such as laminates from home furnishings, semi-precious stones, wood and metal chains. Sourcing these unique materials can be tough. My pieces are rather bold, and personally there's always a struggle to achieve this right balance between artistic vision and commercial viability. Production wise is also difficult as my pieces aren’t mass produced.
CNNGo: Is it a challenge being a male designer working on female accessories?
Tan: Not really. You just need to trust your instincts. That said, I must admit I've become more meticulous about details and I keep an eye out for the different female accessories out there.
CNNGo: What can we expect when your new collection is launched at Parco@Millenia?
Tan: You can anticipate a collection inspired by the kaleidoscope. We’re looking at abstract geometrical and floral shapes with knockout colors.
