With less than a year to go for the first-ever Youth Olympics Games in Singapore, we round up the latest news snippets about the inaugural event.

The official mascots for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games 2010 have been unveiled -- Lyo, a lion cub, embodies the values of Excellence and Friendship, while Merly, a merlion, personifies the values of Excellence and Respect.

124 National Olympic Councils or NOCs have been twinned or paired up with 225 Singapore schools as part of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Culture and Education Programme. Some schools like Jurong Junior College have gone the extra mile by visiting the country they are twinned with -- in this case, Russia.

The YOG Village at the Nanyang Technological University campus will be an environmentally-friendly hub. Equipment such as motion sensors for lighting, water-saving devices and energy-efficient air-conditioning units will be used to reduce the carbon footprints of the 3,600 athletes expected for the Aug 14-26 Games, as well as NTU hostelites who will use the facility after the YOG.

Youth football coach and former Singapore international David Sivalingam died in hospital after collapsing at a charity game. The 51-year-old National Football Academy Under-14 coach, who was coach of the Asian Youth Games and Youth Olympics teams, was playing a benefit match for former Woodlands Wellington player S Anthonysamy, who was paralysed in 1996 after a tragedy on the football field.

The Youth Olympic Games will offer a Culture and Education Program that showcases Singapore's methods in conserving and managing water, including games to learn about Singapore's water conservation efforts. .

Formed at the beginning of last year to try and groom young athletes for next year's Youth Olympic Games, the Wrestling Federation of Singapore (WFS) has been fervently promoting the sport as a co-curricular activity in local schools.
