From her living room: Singapore's YouTube singing sensation
Ling's first YouTube release, "Larkin Steps," was taken off YouTube and her account suspended due to 'technical issues.' It is back up and gaining lots of admirers (Video from YouTube).
The video's super grainy -- it's obviously shot in her own living room -- but oh my, the voice! Ng Ling Kai, better known as Ling, is a massive YouTube hit from Singapore, with already over one million views of her first self-written song, "Larkin Steps."
Throw in 12,000-odd comments all along the lines of "wow," "freakin' amazing" and "I love your voice" and it seems a new sensation is born.
Ling last year released her own album "Honestly" (available both as EP and on iTunes), with all her own lyrics and compositions. She's planning her second album now, and also opened for Aimee Mann's concert at the Esplanade on August 29 with a solo acoustic set.
All this and she's turning 22 years of age this year.
But her real draw is her sheer unpretentiousness. Her YouTube videos are all taken by herself at home, with absolutely no fuss or bother. Forget expensive sets, digital mastering and even make-up -- it's all about the music and songs for this 'girl next door.'
And who said Singapore doesn't have talent?
In fact, her online popularity was so great, it raised a big ruckus among Youtubers when the video hosting site took down her video for reasons yet unknown (many suspected hackers, but others wondered who would want to target this sweet young thing).
Check out Ling's official website and blog, where she posts updates on her latest songs and happenings.
