Singapore scenes: A visitor's favorite photo spots
Norm Mah shares some of the best clicks from his trip to Singapore where he sampled the food and toured the city with his girlfriend May
By Norm Mah 25 April, 2010Singapore is truly a scenic and cosmopolitan city, and lives up to its reputation as the Asian food-culture crossroads. I found its skyline filled with high-rises and skyscrapers, and even the Singapore Flyer, which reminded me of something I once saw somewhere else (The London Eye?).
In the shadows of the high-rises are the two things that make this place stand out as a worthy travel destination: its people and its food. There are photo opportunities in every city, but I found some of the best photo opportunities are found where the people gather, and in Singapore they are where the food is. Singapore takes it food very seriously, and it seems that if people aren't eating, they're planning where to eat their next meal. Food here is generally inexpensive, and offers a mix of Chinese, Malay and Indian. Fast food here is good, and food courts here are the Hawker centers, which are found all over the island.
I had a wonderful time visiting Singapore and my girlfriend, now my fiancée, May. I proposed to her a few days earlier on our four-day visit to Phuket, Thailand. Her family was very generous and welcomed me into their homes. They were kind enough to show me the sights, and kept me eating non-stop. They joked that I would gain four kilos before the end of the trip. I had to run 3k every other day to keep my waistline from ballooning, since I only brought one pair of jeans on the trip. Special thanks to May and her Cousin-in-law Jen Sen, for showing me around and helping with this photo essay.
