Move over Cirque du Soleil, Singapore has its own circus theater spectacular

Starting in June, "Voyage de la Vie" will be the island state's very own dazzling circus show
Cirque du Soleil's KA show in VegasWill Voyage de la Vie be of the standard to rival Cirque du Soleil's KA show in Vegas? Designer Mark Fisher thinks so.

We all love the circus -- the high-flying trapeze acts, the big-ring feel, the clowns and larger-than-life characters. That's what we suspect is the real reason why modern circus acts like Cirque du Soleil are so immensely popular. And in June, Singapore will have its own, the first circus theater spectacular to originate from the Garden City.

"Voyage de la Vie" will be Resorts World Sentosa's resident show, and the casino resort is calling it "a fast-paced, colorful, stunt-a-minute spectacular filled with death-defying circus acts, mind-boggling feats of agility, speed and balance, pulsating music, stunning sets and costumes." Sounds good, and so far, it looks like the elements to pull it off are all in place.

At the helm is famous designer Mark Fisher, who is best known for designing the sets for the world tours of Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, U2, Tina Turner and Robbie Williams, as well as designing the opening and closing ceremonies for both the Torino 2006 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. His stage design credits include "We Will Rock You", Cirque du Soleil's gravity-defying Vegas production of "Ka" and also the recently premiered "Elvis."

"Voyage de la Vie" translates from French to mean "a journey of life." The story, as we know it, is of a young man's rite of passage as he moves from the modern corporate world and escapes into a fantasy computer world where he journeys into the dark hidden depths of his imagination to find meaning and fulfillment.

According to Andrea Teo, vice president of Entertainment at RWS, Voyage de la Vie is Singapore's most ambitious theater project to date. "We have been working on the show for two years and we are proud to be creating a legacy which we hope will continue for generations to come. Producing an original production on this scale is unprecedented in this market. It's something we are willing to do because we feel that this is the next step for Singapore's arts and entertainment industry."

The show will premiere at Resorts World Sentosa on June 17 this year, and tickets will go on sale from tomorrow onwards at all Sistic outlets.
