The 5 best Singapore views: BYO as these are sans cover charge
Grab a bottle of wine, and don comfy shoes -- these views are worth the effort. Don't forget the opener! And the camera
By Eddie Tee 22 April, 2010Forgo the cover charge at New Asia Bar on the 71st story of the Stamford hotel and instead pack your own supplies. These locations may be a little obscure but these views are well worth the effort. And cost.
1. One George StreetGetting there: Take a train to Raffles City MRT Station. Leave by Exit H. Walk to One George Street, and take the lift up to Fitness First. Go to the infinity pool.
Best seen: At dusk or night.
Boat Quay, the old parliament buildings, and the Singapore River are laid out at your feet. Try not to walk over the infinity pool into oblivion.
2. View of EsplanadeGetting there: Make your way to Marina Square. Go up to the food court. Walk through the glass door, leave the food court, and walk up the stairs to a landing.
Best seen: At night.
There’s nothing quite like seeing the world-famous 'durians' of the Esplanade light up (from green to red to blue) at night against the backdrop of Shenton Way. The staircase landing is large enough for 2 people and a tripod for the shutterbugs.
3. Benjamin Sheares BridgeGetting there: Walk up the Benjamin Sheares Bridge from Beach Road (near Blu Jaz Café). Follow it until it curves out over the sea.
Best seen: Whenever the weather's clear.
You’ll get a view of The Concourse, Golden Mile Complex and Little India. Don’t mind the speeding cars and the noise -- a little disconcerting, but the view makes up for that.
4. Marina BarrageGetting there: Get to Marina Bay MRT Station. There’s a shuttle bus service (Mon-Fri 8.30am- 7.15pm; Sat, Sun & PH 9am- 9pm) between Marina Bay MRT Station and Marina Barrage.
Best seen: At night.
Wait until dusk. Climb up to the park in the sky, and watch the enormous Singapore Flyer light up like an oversized doughnut.
5. Jurong HillGetting there: Get to Boon Lay MRT Station. Take bus service 194 or 251. Get off at Jurong Bird Park and follow the directions up to Jurong Hill. You'll know the spot when you see it, trust us.
Best seen: At night.
Oddly enough, the spectacle of an industrial park at night can be quite breath-taking (and rather romantic). It looks like a lit up birthday cake. Don’t miss the fire on top of the flume – the ultimate candle.
6. Secret site -- we have no idea!Getting there: We’re not quite sure ourselves.
Best seen: During the day, apparently.
We know we’ve said five spots. But here is one we are kind of curious about. Judging by the video, it is 50 stories of hard climbing, and not for the faint-hearted.
Let us know where this is. If you have your own favorite view of Singapore, share with us your secret spot!
