Unapologetic chick drink of the week: Tippling Club's Velvet Fog

This is no wispy girlie drink -- it packs quite a punch despite the color and name
The Velvet Fog from Tippling ClubStrangely, the best part of the Velvet Fog's not in the taste, but playing with the swirling mist.

It's purple, comes out of a frosty flask and you're suppose to inhale the lavender vapors when you sip. Talk about blending cocktail mixology and aromatherapy. Tippling Club's new concoction, Velvet Fog, is not the sort of drink a manly man's man would be seen hoisting after a hard day's work, but believe us, it's actually quite the taste (and smell) sensation. It's also delivers a kick like Chuck Norris.

Matthew Bax of Tippling Club
Master mixologist Matthew Bax whipping up one of his signature concoctions.
Matthew Bax, co-founder of Tippling Club and arguably one of the best mixologists in these lands, demonstrated to CNNGo how to make a Velvet Fog with gin, Creme de Violette, champagne and a citrus liqueur, topping it off with his own special 'fog' (mist created from the drink with dry ice which actually does smell and taste floral with a faint violet color). As you drink, the bartender constantly refills the fog from a large flask, keeping the drink cool and colorful.

"We’re trying to create a new sort of sensory high through cocktails that hasn’t been done before. At Tippling Club, it’s about the entire experience, from enjoying the descriptions on the menu, to being amused by the presentation, to savoring the smell (in some instances, fog) and taste of the cocktail," says Bax.

The Velvet Fog is one of the new creations from Tippling Club's seasonal cocktail menu, which includes other whimsical items like MB's Apple Pie (not an actual pie but a drink which looks and tastes like it's really from the Golden Arches), The Importance of Being Ernest (a take on daddy Hemingway's favorite drink, the Papa Doble Daiquiri), and Choose Your Own Adventure, where you pick your base spirit of choice and the bartender does the rest (just like the children's reading genre of the same name, for those old enough to remember).

The Velvet Fog was inspired by jazz legend Mel Tormé, who was also nicknamed "the Velvet Fog" and by the flavors of the rare Blue Moon cocktail of 1917 (which was way before our time, but still sounds very intriguing). It's priced at S$25 each.
