Unapologetic chick drink of the week: Chili Padi Mary
Will the Singapore love for all things spicy be the death of us? And how hot is too hot?
We've mentioned before about how the original Bloody Mary was said to be made popular at the St. Regis New York so it comes as no surprise that the various St. Regis hotels around the world have their own localized versions of the drink.
Here on local grounds, the guys at St. Regis Singapore's Astor Bar have concocted a drink as hot as, well, hell. Inspired by South East Asia’s culinary heritage, the Chili Padi Mary (S$19 each) is infused with slices of Chinese ginger, a dash of lemon grass and a sizable portion of chilli padi -- not your everyday chili but the tiny ones that makes tastebuds run screaming away in horror at the mere mention. Chili addicts, you know what we're talking about.
The Chilli Padi Mary offers a taste which is uniquely Singaporean though the weak-livered might want to have something cooling on the standby... like a fire brigade or a swimming pool of ice. But if you chicken out (and we won't think less of you, promise), Astor Bar also serves up one of the best Bloody Mary cocktails around town.
