It's foot power versus pedal power as pedestrians and cyclists learn to get along in Tampines

Pedestrians and cyclists to co-exist

Tampines is now officially Singapore's first cycling town, as the local Town Council put into effect amended by-laws to allow cyclists to share space with pedestrians. Under the new regulations, the Council can take action against reckless cyclists on footways.

According to the Straits Times, residents were largely satisfied with the infrastructure, which includes widened footways and clearly-marked cyclists' and pedestrians' paths, and welcomed the idea of a shared walkway. Some residents cycled mostly to get to and from school or work, or for leisure trips to the nearby parks.

"It is much safer than cycling on the roads. There is also enough space on the footways so that we can cross over quickly and avoid pedestrians," said Mohammad Adib, a teacher who cycles to work every day.
