75 years of the Bloody Mary
Harry's Bar in Paris or St Regis in New York? The jury's still out on the origins of the Bloody Mary but the popularity of this cocktail is undisputed -- it's a standard item in any bar menu.A little bit of cocktail trivia, or is it a myth? The origin of the Bloody Mary (according to The St. Regis Singapore) or the Red Snapper as it was first known, was invented 75 years ago by Frenchman Fernand Petiot in the King Cole Bar at the St Regis New York. The story is told in a press release, which claims "the cocktail was created when Serge Obolensky, a well known man about town whose penchant for vodka was in keeping with his aristocratic Russian background, asked Petiot to make the vodka cocktail he had in Paris. The formula was spiced up with salt, pepper, lemon and Worcestershire Sauce, but since 'Bloody Mary' was deemed too vulgar for the hotel’s elegant King Cole Bar, it was rechristened the 'Red Snapper.'"
However, other sources places its origins as Paris in the 1920s at Harry's New York Bar by the same Fernand Petiot, who served it to Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, among others.
Whoever you believe, or whatever the truth, the St. Regis Singapore is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Bloody Mary cocktail as one of the most loved (and needed) cocktails ever created.
Astor Bar at the St Regis is offering a trio of Bloody Marys for a special tasting experience of the cocktail, including the original Red Snapper, The St. Regis Singapore’s signature Chili Padi Mary and Bora Mary, the signature cocktail from The St. Regis Bora Bora. The set of Bloody Marys is priced at S$15++ during the month of October.
