The great Singapore car boot sale: No dead bodies, promise
Drive in, pop the boot and sell, sell, sell. Simple and perfect for homegrown entrepreneurs.Car boots are useful for something other than the nefarious disposal of sins and corpses. Stacks of old books and comics, preloved clothes and even the odd branded bag and accessory -- it's the monthly Singapore Car Boot Sale, held every month at the grounds of Playground @ Big Splash. It's not hippie throwback to the sixties, but a great flea market for homegrown designers and self-made artists.
The monthly Car Boot Sale has become a community where regulars meet monthly to catch up and have fun and at times, beers and the occasional ice cream. Sellers pay S$50 to set up a stall for two days over the weekend, which includes parking charges for the entire day. This is comparable to the sporadic Sunday flea markets at Zouk and the bi-monthly Saturday bazaars at Tanglin Mall, which charge $20 and $50 respectively for a space.
Talking to the Straits Times, Playground organizer Wan Jia Wei said the event allows families to "have a fun day of buying, selling and haggling" together. Apart from the usual second-hand books and clothes, there are electronic accessories such as PlayStationPortable (PSP) covers, golf clubs and even $500 rose quartz stools.
