Chef Ignatius Chan attributes Iggy's success to his team of chefs, who work in a kitchen that's not run by a head chef.

When the Miele Guide launched its 2009/2010 edition, it didn't come as much of a surprise that Singapore's entries ranked high on the annual list of Asia's Top 20 Restaurants. Four local eateries placed in the top ten ranking, with three of them dominating the top five spots. Here are the top 5 picks for Singapore.

1. Iggy's

Chef and restauranteur Ignatius Chan took the top honors again for Singapore, despite slipping down a notch to second place for the overall Asia ranking. Since it opened in September 2004, Iggy's has consistently won rave reviews both locally and internationally. In this year alone, the self-titled restaurant has garnered a lot of recognition by taking 45th place in the S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants 2009.

2. Jaan Par Andre

This restaurant, located on the 70th floor of Swissôtel The Stamford Hotel Singapore, is not new or unfamiliar to the Singapore gourmet scene, yet it's a newcomer to the Miele Guide's 2009/2010 edition. The guide attributes this rise to fame to chef Andre Chiang, who has "revitalized the outlet and elevated it to gastronomic hotspot, adored by local and regional foodies, and which now also bears his name."

3. Les Amis

The name 'Les Amis' is no stranger in Singapore, having been operating since 1994. With its "consistently high food quality, impressive wine collection and reliable service," the Miele Guide calls it "an institution in fine dining" and credits it with putting Singapore on the world's gourmet map, as well as cultivating a generation of more discerning diners.

4. Gunther's Modern French Cuisine

Gunther's ranks 7th on the overall Asia's top 20 list. Since it opened in August 2007, it has steadily made a name for itself with its focus on serving only the freshest ingredients. According to the Guide, regulars at Gunther's usually give chef Gunther Hubrechsen 'carte blanche' in their dining choices, allowing him to decide what he will serve them that day.

5. Au Jardin

Set in a colonial bungalow amidst the greens of the Botanic Gardens, Au Jardin is another institution for French cuisine in Singapore. In fact, Singaporean chef Galvin Lim is so adept with French cooking that he was inducted into the Commanderie of Côtes de Bordeaux in 2008, one of the highest recognition for chefs and sommeliers in France.

Absolutely agreed. Jaan and Les Amis are arguably SG's best chances at scoring 2 to 3 Michelin stars should the French guide decides to come. Au Petit Salut at Dempsey Hill is also a great restaurant.
