In wake of Crashgate, all eyes are on Hamilton

Forget the cheating controversy, Singapore is waiting to find out if Hamilton can survive the fans and paparazzi to win this year's F1

Here we are, on the eve of the Singapore F1 Grand Prix, where the whole country grinds to a standstill and all the world can talk about is the Crashgate scandal.

But on the ground, Singapore is excited to see Lewis Hamilton back.

The 24-year-old Formula One racing superstar is the man of the hour now, with Schumi out of the picture for medical reasons. He received an overwhelming welcome at his first appearance for McLaren team partners Mercedes at Paragon, only a few hours after touching down at Changi Airport. According to Today Online, Lewis had hoped to have more time for his huge pool of fans here

Speaking with media at his appearance, Hamilton said, "I definitely have to redeem myself after the last race in Monza, and it would be great to win here." Having finished third in Singapore last year and crashing out in the final lap of the Monza race earlier this month, he's under a lot of pressure to perform.

However, his personal life is under some scrutiny as well -- reports are rampant that he's split up with Nicole Scherzinger, which he's denied, insisting he still loves the singer.

But the celebrity rumor-mill is pointing to the contrary, especially since the Pussycat Doll pulled out in the last minute of her hosting gig with F1 Rocks.
