ITB Asia 2009: 'Asia remains tops for travel'
Singapore's Minister for Trade and Development tries out the new Qatar Air business-class seats at the launch of ITB Asia 2009.The Asia-Pacific region remains a top choice for more than two-thirds of travellers from the UK and United States, says Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, citing surveys carried out by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).
Opening for this year's ITB Asia convention, Lim was upbeat about Asia tourism prospects -- he pointed to the Asian Development Bank's revision of growth projections for Asia for 2010, stating that the region will be "poised to lead the recovery."
"With intra-regional travel accounting for more than 80 percent of travel traffic in the Asia-Pacific, the projected higher economic growth and potential increase in outbound travel in Aia bodes well for us (Asia)."
Despite the effects of the recent global economic downturn, Singapore registered a record S$15.2 billion in tourism receipts, with 2008 being a record year as well for the business-travel industry, with 3 million business travel and Meetings Incentive Conventions Exhibitions (M.I.C.E.) visitors coming into the island. The Singapore Tourism Board has also injected a S$90 million boost to developing Singapore as a tourist destination, with multiple marketing campaigns in the works.
