Start-stop traffic drives Singapore crazy

'Get a move on already,' holler Singaporean drivers fed up with driving in spurts
IBM Commuter Pain IndexWhat makes drivers crazy? Start-stop traffic and rude road users, that's what.

Start-stop traffic, followed by rude and aggressive drivers are the most frustrating problems faced by Singapore commuters.

That's according to the latest IBM Commuter Pain Index, which finds that more than half of the 405 respondents in Singapore feel that start-stop traffic is the most frustrating problem they have to face on the roads.

Drive angry

The survey looks at 20 cities across 10 different criteria, including total commuting time, the price of fuel and even the degree of road rage engendered by time spent behind the wheel.

Singaporean drivers get off lightly compared to residents of the likes of Bangkok and Jakarta, with 55 percent of respondents saying the longest they spent stuck in traffic in the past three years was 30 minutes or less.

Topping the list of traffic-beleaguered cities are growing hotspots Mexico City, Shenzhen and Beijing, while Montreal, London and Chicago rank as the least painful cities in which to commute.

Paved paradise?

"We cannot simply build our way out of congestion no matter which city," says Duncan Ashby, industry leader for Intelligent Transport Solutions at IBM ASEAN.

"In order to improve traffic flow and congestion, cities need to move beyond knowing and reacting. They have to find ways to anticipate and avoid situations that cause congestion that could turn the world into one giant parking lot."
