Paddles up! The Singapore Paddle Club are stroking 500 miles to raise funds for charity
The Proclaimers merely sang about walking 500 miles, the Singapore Paddle Club (SPC) are physically putting in 500 miles (800 kilometers), stroking their way from Singapore to Kalimantan.
The feat is part of SPC's bid to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundationâs Paddlers in the Pink and CARE Singapore.
The team led by expedition leader Rod McCurdy, comprises coâleader Nicholas Yap and former two-times Kayak World Champion Denes Szaszak, along with 10 other paddlers.
The team of 12 sets off on June 4 from Singapore's Keppel Bay Marina and are expected to reach Indonesia's Pulau Pangkil Besar by tonight with an aim to finish by this Saturday.
The journey has been broken up in distance blocks, some days stroking 40 miles, other days stroking up to 160 miles.
The first journey of its kind in the world, the 500-mile odyssey is set to create history as the team traverses the open seas with their modern outrigger canoe.
In preparation, the paddlers have undergone six months of intense training, six days per week, similar to what "ultra" runners or ironmen undertake to build strength and endurance.
While they've already raised S$20,000 prior to setting off, the team are hoping their courageous effort will bring in more funds to support their two partner charities.
