'GE11: We Were There': Capturing the heart of the Singapore General Elections
A 60-page commemorative magazine featuring 105 photographs by 16 Singaporeans puts the the highs and lows of the Singapore General Elections in perspective
By Charlene Fang 27 May, 2011From the fiery rallies and heartfelt speeches, to the campaign trails through hawker centers and HDB flats and to the Polling Day climax, 16 photographers captured all the action of the Singapore General Elections.
Together, the images have been compiled into "GE11: We Were There," a 60-page commemorative magazine, a collaboration between former Straits Times picture editor Cherian George's company Mixmedia, and Platform, a volunteer photographer group.
“This passion project is our gift to fellow Singaporeans,” said George, the magazine's publisher.
“More than 150 candidates, thousands of helpers and two million voters contributed to this historic election. We hope that the publication will help people remember this mega event, and that they in turn will support other photojournalism projects through the Wee Kim Wee Legacy Fund.”
The images certainly capture the length and breadth of the elections.
Iconic images such as Workers' Party candidate Chen Show Mao bowing with his passport and identity card clenched in his hand, Singapore People's Party candidate Chiam See Tong departing Potong Pasir after his loss, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong hoisted on the shoulders of People's Action Party supporters and to a collage of Returning Office Yam Ah Mee; the election's accidental celebrity.
“The magazine is not meant to be a comprehensive historical record of the election, but it captures how it touched citizens and each of the photographers in different ways and levels,” said Tay Kay Chin, co-founder of Platform and the magazine’s picture editor and designer.
Proceeds from the sale of the magazine will be donated to the Wee Kim Wee Legacy Fund at Nanyang Technological University to support documentary photography projects.
The magazine retails for S$11 per copy and is available at Books Actually (86 Club St., +65 6222 9195) and Books Kinokuniya (#03-09/10/15 Takashimaya Shopping Centre , +65 6737 5021). For more information, email ge11@mixmedia.sg
