Shashlik: Russian staples

Got borscht on the brain? Get to Shashlik -- Singapore's old-school Russian-fusion dining hotspot. Its the kind of eatery you can slurp down bowls of borscht and marvel at the baked Alaska as its being flambéed at your table side, or throw back their version of deviled eggs and feast on the ever-popular oxtail stew. 

Truth be told, Shashlik isn't exactly the most authentic Russian experience, but who cares when this landmark restaurant is run by Hainanese chefs -- Chinese cooks who've adapted Russian dishes to suit local palates. The decor at Shashlik is as off-the-wall as the cuisine with a menagerie of 1970s kitsch -- fairy lights and all.
