Fremantle Seafood Market

Fremantle appeals to our inner fisherman with sea-fresh fish and oysters, and its sheer volume amazed us. Like their Seafood Platters (S$98 for two to four persons; larger portions available): a double-decker monstrosity of chilled oysters, Alaskan Crab claw, sashimi, smoked fish, octopi, and mussels. It’s listed as a starter, but it’ll do as a meal.

Main courses are mix-and-match affairs where fish are baked, grilled, deep-fried, steamed, or poached to your liking. We particularly enjoyed the Barramundi Baked with Sea Salt (S$35 to S$55) for its fall-off-the bone flesh.

This bar/restaurant/fish market has indoor seating, but the best place is on the airy alfresco verandah which overlooks Central and the occasional tourist bumboat. Head there during the evenings when it’s cooler, or just after the rain. There’s also a retail market which sells fresh and marinated seafood, and Fish & Chips (S$19) to go.
