If you need to impress clients and business contacts and still keep the CFO smiling, here’s a round-up of the best lunches in Singapore for under S$40 a person.

Au Petit Salut

For upmarket French cuisine, head on down to Au Petit Salut opposite the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The 100-seat restaurant offers indoor and alfresco dining, so if it's a cool day, there's always the option to dine in the open. On the menu, Au Petit Salut has maintained constantly delicious nosh since its opening -- one of its best traits is its consistency. For S$30 per person, you can enjoy their set lunch -- starters, mains, desserts and a cuppa. Go for their half dozen baked Burgundy snails with tomato and garlic butter, red wine braised beef cheeks (extremely tender meat which melts in your mouth), carrots, mushrooms and parsley potatoes and for dessert, their crème brulée infused with fresh Madagascar vanilla beans. Just don't tell anyone we suggested you may need to sleep it off once you're done.

La Terrazza

Dig into a quality Italian lunch at Da Paolo's La Terrazza, a breezy restaurant located in Holland Village. At S$32 (plus tax) per person, you have a choice of simple but impressive starters and for mains the chef's recommended fish or meat dish of the day. Throw in dessert and a coffee, and your party is well fed and hopefully also suitably impressed.

Japanese Dining Sun

It is hard to find a decent lunch quite as affordable as Japanese Dining Sun at Chijmes, with their range of set lunch menus, starting from just over S$10. For their S$40 set lunch, you'll get a premium sushi platter, steamed egg custard, a choice of one main dish (beef, tempura, grilled salmon belly, beef udon, grilled eel and ramen), steaming miso soup and ice cream. We love it.

For a more colonial touch, head down to Foster's English Rose Cafe. With a choice of two menus, priced at S$16.50 and S$18.50, you'll definitely be able to fill 'er up at a decent price. The latter menu offers a soup of the day, a choice of mains (hokubee fillet steak or oxtail stew -- a lovely, slightly rich meat stew with tender chunks of oxtail, potatoes and carrots), dessert of the day and a cuppa (coffee or tea). One thing to note -- Foster's looks great at night, especially the alfresco dining area.
