Quintet is a rare find in Shanghai: a five-room bed-and-breakfast in one of the city’s historic 1930s lane houses.

This homey B & B is tucked behind Closed Door restaurant -- which is where the 'breakfast' aspect of the establishment is served from -- and access is via narrow, original wooden stairs.

Quintet's room names also play homage to 1930s Shanghai such as Fleur de Shanghai, a type of opium perfume. A plant-filled roof deck offers a slice of calm from which you can overlook the surrounding neighborhood.

Like many bed and breakfasts, the winning feature here is the personal touch -- it's why you stay here.

Quintet's owner Fay Yen is eager to offer guests the whole experience of traveling in Shanghai, from customizing rooms and pointing out the best local spa packages to writing out the Chinese names of delicious Shanghai dishes served restaurants near by Quintet.
