2,010 tigers make a temporary home in Westgate Mall
The beautiful Thousand Tiger Scroll by 'peasant painter' Xiao Yanqing is displayed in a local mall to celebrate Chinese New Year
By Jessica Beaton, Shanghai Editor 11 February, 2010It sounds tacky -- and the manifestations sometimes are -- but Shanghai malls often have some of the best Chinese New Year decorations around. One of our favorites this year is the Thousand Tiger Scroll that was unveiled last week at Westgate Mall.
Although we were a little suspicious at first, after being dragged inside by a curious friend we were duly impressed. Okay, we could have done without the red Christmas lights adorning the top of what is a truly beautiful scroll painting, but this 200 meter length of art with 2,010 tigers by “peasant painter” Xiao Yanqing in celebration of the Year of the Tiger is absolutely worth a look.
If you don't think the mall is the best place to appreciate beautiful works of art, we don't blame you. But don't fret, you won’t necessarily miss out, you'll just have to wait a while, as the piece’s next stop will be the 2010 Expo.
