Tiger Woods looks for redemption in Shanghai
Tiger Woods looks to Shanghai in November to get his game back on course. If there’s anywhere to look for a clean slate, Shanghai just might be the place, even for Tiger Woods, who is coming off the worse score of his career last week, and a torrid year personally.
Tiger Woods (known in Chinese as “Lao Hu”), according to the Wall Street Journal, has confirmed his return to Shanghai for WGC-HSBC Championships at the city’s Sheshan International Golf Club in November.
"This is a title the players would love to win, and I am looking forward to having another shot at the title this year,” said Woods in a statement to the press. “The success of the WGC-HSBC Champions last year was noted all around the world and I believe, along with golf's new Olympic status, the WGC-HSBC Championship will play a very significant role in developing the game of golf in Asia and around the globe. I am looking forward to returning to Shanghai and the immaculately conditioned Sheshan International Golf Club in November.”
This will be Tiger Wood’s fourth visit to the Sheshan International Golf Club, where he was runner-up in 2005 and 2006 and finished sixth last year -- a painful result just a few weeks before his personal life hit a new low -- behind winner Phil Mickelson, who is also confirmed to play in this year's tournament.
The quote that summed up Woods' last Shanghai performance, was when he yelled “I just can’t get a swing!”
Additionally, Woods shot 77 on Sunday to finish at 18-over 298 at the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio. It was his worst score of his career on the PGA Tour.
In China, where golf has taken off -- especially among the young elite -- there has been little judgment of Tiger Woods' personal life, although in a country of up-and-coming golf fans, there might be less forgiveness for a repeat of his recent poor golfing performances.
