Wanted: Eye-catching logo for Hangzhou's West Lake
Designated as a UNESCO's World Heritage site in June, West Lake's shores are dotted with scenic temples, pagodas and gardens.West Lake (杭州西湖), Hangzhou’s foremost tourist attraction, is teaming up with local newspaper Qianjiang Evening News to find a dazzling logo for itself.
The quest was inspired by West Lake’s designation as one of the 12 new UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on June 24.
“After the designation, West Lake is in urgent need of an eye-catching, creative, and meaningful logo, which can represent the combined elements of West Lake and world heritages,” reported Xinhua News Agency.

Liu Ying (刘颖), supervisor of West Lake management committee, told Xinhua that the logo will be widely used in tourism materials, maps and road signs.
“A distinctive logo is invaluable to represent West Lake’s heritage and to promote the lake,” added Liu.
“It will surely become a symbol of West Lake on the world stage, for example at the World Travel Fair or as a travel souvenir,” another officer of the committee told Qianjiang Evening News.
Expert tips
Wang Xueqing (王雪青), dean of School of Design in China Academy of Arts, listed three key elements for the logo:
- Iconic of West Lake and easily recognizable.
- Simple and direct
- It should embody the geographic features and cultural connotations of the lake.

“[Chinese design] industry generally considers the Chinese knot [used by Bejiing to apply for the Olympics] and Melbourne’s city symbol fine logo examples,” explained Wang.

How to submit
Logo submissions from designers around the world will be accepted from now till December 18. The organizers will disclose 10 finalists on the same day.
The logos will be then put into online and short-message polls till December 26, and the final winner will be announced at the end of December, according to the public voting results and the evaluation of the organizers.
Candidates can submit their logo designs through email or snail mail.
