51 things to do in Shanghai this summer

May through August are arguably Shanghai's best, albeit hottest, months: Here are 51 ways to enjoy the season
Shanghai beachShanghai really does have a beach. If you want to dive in is another issue.

1. Happy Valley

Can’t stand the Shanghai summer heat? Grab friends and try the virtual canyon white water rafting at Happy Valley, which is now only a metro ride away. Post-"rafting," find the real meaning of wind power on the amusement park’s roller coasters.

2. Oriental Land

If you’re looking for a summer family outing, then Oriental Land is where you should head, offering everything from barbecue pits and kite-flying areas to the oddly cool navy submarine area, amphibious vehicles and water walking balls (who doesn’t want to walk on water?). For the adults with a kid inside, but not at their side, make sure to hit-up the nearby paintball range.

3. South Bund Beach

Shanghai beach bums can rejoice and put down that ticket to Thailand, as Shanghai’s Bund-side sand is back in action. Charging RMB 20 entrance for the privilege of sitting in one of the two dozen or so lounge chairs, the beach offers unblocked views of Pudong, which should be amazing when it's lit up at night.

Although Sunny Beach has little more than sand, chairs and a great view, with the Cool Docks and Waterhouse next door, and the beach's liberal "bring whatever food and drink you want" policy, you won’t be missing a boardwalk’s typical fast food and games.
